About this piece
A Victorian portrait engraving of a composed woman — period dress, delicate lace, an expression you cannot read at all. Beside her face she holds a theatrical mask wearing a bright, pleasant, socially acceptable smile. The mask, in soft dusty rose, is doing considerably more emoting than she is.
The lettering is sincere to the point of suspicion: 'I am behaving normally.' Set seriously, framed in climbing vines and antique roses, as if a respectable Victorian publication is reassuring you that everything is perfectly fine.
For anyone holding it together in public with both hands and one decorative mask.
The artwork leans devotional without becoming costume: candle flame, moon phases, and quiet floral ornament arranged like a private altar with excellent table manners.
